Allianz Care health insurance for expats in Asia

Allianz Care is the international private medical insurance (IPMI) arm of Allianz. IPMIAsia sets out its three core plans, the optional out-patient and dental modules, the underwriting choices that suit people with medical history, and how it works for an expat in Asia.

In short: Allianz Care is the international health insurance arm of Allianz, built around three core plans, Care Base, Care Enhanced and Care Signature, with optional out-patient and dental modules at the same level. It suits expats in Asia who want a global insurer and, above all, a choice of underwriting basis: FMU, moratorium, CPME or switch terms, which matters most for anyone with medical history.
Key takeaways
  • Out-patient and dental modules must match the level of the core plan: a Care Enhanced core takes Care Enhanced modules.
  • Moratorium underwriting carries a 24-month waiting period on pre-existing conditions; FMU asks 20 health questions and gives certainty upfront.
  • Skipping required pre-authorisation means Allianz pays 80% of inpatient and 50% of other eligible benefits; emergencies must be reported within 48 hours.
  • Allianz publishes four areas, Worldwide, Worldwide excluding USA, Africa only and Europe; none is Asia-only, so for Asia excluding the USA is the usual saving.

How the Allianz Care plans are built

Allianz Care keeps the structure simple. You pick one of three core plans, then decide whether to add out-patient cover and dental cover as separate modules. The one rule to remember is that the modules must match the level of the core plan you choose: a Care Enhanced core takes Care Enhanced modules, not Signature ones.

Core planPosition in the range
Care BaseEntry-level core cover
Care EnhancedThe mid-tier, with broader limits and benefits
Care SignatureAllianz's most comprehensive level

Maximum plan limit: Care Base US$1,350,000 (£830,000), Care Enhanced US$2,700,000 (£1,660,000), Care Signature US$5,000,000 (£3,100,000). Areas of cover: Worldwide, Worldwide excluding USA, Africa only and Europe (Allianz Care Table of Benefits, Care, valid from 1 November 2025, pp.6 and 20, read 19 October 2026).

What is covered at each layer

Two decisions drive most of the price. The first is the core level and its matching modules. The second is the area of cover: if you will not be treated in the USA, leaving it out is the largest single saving on offer. If you are not sure whether you need the out-patient module at all, our guide to inpatient versus outpatient cover is the place to start.

A genuine choice of underwriting basis

This is where Allianz Care differs from most of the market. Many insurers underwrite one way. Allianz lets you choose how your medical history is treated, and for anyone with a history of any kind that choice can change what is covered from the first day of the policy.

FMU (Full Medical Underwriting)
You answer Allianz's application, which has 20 health questions. Allianz assesses the answers and tells you before you buy what is covered, excluded or loaded, so there is certainty from day one.
Moratorium
No health questions upfront. Pre-existing conditions carry a 24-month waiting period and can become eligible once you have gone two continuous years without symptoms, treatment or advice for them.
CPME (Continued Personal Medical Exclusions)
If you are switching from another insurer, your existing personal exclusions carry across unchanged, with no fresh underwriting of new conditions.
CTT (Continued or switch terms)
You move onto broadly equivalent terms from your previous plan. Switch terms must be properly maintained, or Allianz may fall back to full medical underwriting.
If you have medical history, which basis you choose is the decision that matters most. Nomi flags it during the comparison and an experienced adviser confirms the terms before you buy. Our pre-existing conditions guide explains how to think about the trade-off.

Allianz Care for expats in Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and beyond

Allianz Care publishes four areas of cover, Worldwide, Worldwide excluding USA, Africa only and Europe (Allianz Care Table of Benefits, Care, valid from 1 November 2025, pp.6 and 20, read 19 October 2026), and for most people living in Asia worldwide excluding the USA is the natural one. It keeps you covered across the region, including treatment in a neighbouring hub such as Singapore or Hong Kong, while removing the US from the premium. None of the four is an Asia-only area, so if you want a strictly regional plan you will need to compare Allianz with insurers that publish one; our guide to regional versus worldwide cover explains when that trade is worth making.

Allianz publishes each plan limit in sterling, euros, US dollars and Swiss francs, and the plan currency is set at quote, so compare limits in one currency before comparing Allianz against a plan priced in US dollars. The underwriting choice is particularly useful for people who have been in Asia a while and are moving from a local or employer plan: CPME and switch terms let you carry across terms you already hold rather than starting again.

Who Allianz Care suits

A strong fit if you want a global insurer behind the policy, a clean core-plus-modules design, and above all a choice of underwriting. Being able to pick between FMU, moratorium and switch terms is a real advantage for anyone with a medical history.

Worth comparing if you are focused on the lowest entry-level price, or you prefer a single all-inclusive plan over a core with modules. See Allianz next to Cigna Global and IMG Global, or browse all insurers.

Frequently asked questions

What plans does Allianz Care offer?
Three core plans: Care Base, Care Enhanced and Care Signature. You tailor the core with optional Out-patient and Dental modules, which must sit at the same level as the core plan you choose.
How does Allianz Care underwrite pre-existing conditions?
You get a choice. Full Medical Underwriting means you declare your history and get certainty upfront. Moratorium means no declaration but a 24-month waiting period on pre-existing conditions. CPME or switch terms are for people moving from another insurer. IPMIAsia flags which basis you are being offered when it compares the market.
What is the moratorium waiting period with Allianz?
Under moratorium underwriting, pre-existing conditions carry a 24-month waiting period. They can become eligible once you have had two continuous years free of symptoms, treatment or advice for them.
Do I need pre-authorisation?
Yes, for inpatient and high-cost treatment shown in the Table of Benefits. Without required pre-authorisation, Allianz pays 80% of inpatient and 50% of other eligible benefits. Emergencies do not need prior authorisation but must be reported within 48 hours.
Does Allianz Care offer an Asia-only area of cover?
No. Allianz Care's Table of Benefits (Care, valid from 1 November 2025) lists four areas: Worldwide, Worldwide excluding USA, Africa only and Europe. Worldwide excluding the USA is the usual choice for expats living in Asia, as it covers the whole region.
How do I claim with Allianz Care?
Out-patient and dental claims are generally handled through the MyHealth app. Inpatient and high-cost treatment is pre-authorised in advance. Invoices should be submitted within 60 days of discharge.
