VUMI Global health insurance for expats in Asia
VUMI publishes a broad range of international private medical insurance (IPMI) plans under its VIP name. IPMIAsia sets out the core and specialty plans, explains why their maxima are not interchangeable, and shows how to read the deductibles and geographic conditions from Asia.
- Senior VIP and Prime VIP publish a lifetime maximum as well as an annual one, and the lifetime figure is the real ceiling.
- Optimum VIP covers only specified chronic conditions and Access VIP is described as complementary coverage, so neither compares with a core plan on maximum alone.
- Deductibles are plan-specific, for example US$500 to US$20,000 on Optimum VIP, so check the current benefit table.
- Universal VIP is described as worldwide cover; geographic conditions differ most inside the USA, where named network rules apply.
- Optimum VIP is a VUMI plan and is not the same as Optimum Global, a separate insurer.
The VIP plan range
VUMI's range is wider than most international insurers'. The core plans give different overall levels of cover, while the specialty plans target defined needs such as specified chronic conditions or older applicants. The limits below are not interchangeable: some are annual and others are lifetime, and the table shows which is which.
| Plan | Published maximum | Positioning stated by VUMI |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute VIP | Unlimited coverage | Top core plan |
| Universal VIP | US$7m per policy year | Worldwide cover with plan-specific USA network conditions |
| Special VIP | US$5m per policy year | Core international plan with plan-specific USA network conditions |
| Access VIP | US$2m per policy year | Described as complementary coverage |
| Optimum VIP | US$1m per policy year | Protection for specified chronic conditions only |
| Senior VIP | US$3m lifetime; US$500,000 per policy year | For applicants aged 60 to 90 |
| Direct VIP | US$5m per policy year | Hospitalisation and essential outpatient treatment |
| Prime VIP | US$5m lifetime; US$1.5m per policy year | Broad benefits with Prime Network conditions in the USA |
VUMI's current pages state US$7m for Universal VIP and US$5m for Special VIP. Those current figures take precedence over any older summary you may come across.
Reading the range like for like
Three things trip people up when they compare VUMI with a conventional three- or four-tier insurer.
- Annual versus lifetime. Universal, Special, Access, Optimum and Direct publish a per-policy-year maximum. Senior and Prime publish a lifetime maximum as well as an annual one, and the lifetime figure is the real ceiling over the years you hold the plan.
- Core versus specialty. Optimum VIP covers only specified chronic conditions. It is not a general medical plan and should not be lined up against a core plan on maximum alone. Senior VIP is built for applicants aged 60 to 90 and reads differently again.
- Complementary cover. Access VIP is described by VUMI as complementary coverage, which is a different role from a primary plan.
Benefits, geography and deductibles
VUMI's plan pages publish inpatient and outpatient benefit tables, plus medical evacuation and other benefits where applicable. Geographic treatment conditions differ by plan, and they differ most inside the USA, where named VUMI network rules and out-of-network reductions or room limits can apply.
Deductibles are plan-specific. For example, Optimum VIP offers US$500 to US$20,000, and Direct VIP offers US$500 or US$1,000 up to US$50,000 depending on the treatment location. A deductible lowers the premium in exchange for you paying the first part of eligible costs, so the right level depends on what you could absorb in a year with a serious claim. Our guide to inpatient versus outpatient cover explains how deductibles interact with everyday benefits.

Claims and pre-authorisation
VUMI provides separate official online routes for notifications and pre-authorisations on the one hand and for claims on the other. What needs to be pre-authorised depends on the procedure and the policy, so check the Conditions of Coverage for your plan before planned treatment. The authorised sources do not publish an observed average approval time, so none is claimed here.
Eligibility, underwriting and what is not asserted
Published eligibility varies by product. Senior VIP gives an application age range of 60 to 90, while several other plan pages state a maximum application age of 75 and set out waiting periods. Because these details are plan-specific, they must not be carried across the range. The current Conditions of Coverage govern underwriting, exclusions, waiting periods, networks, pre-authorisation and availability. No overall network total and no independent list of named hospital partnerships is asserted on this page. For how underwriting generally works, see our pre-existing conditions guide.
VUMI for expats in Asia
VUMI's published geographic conditions are framed mainly around the United States, where network rules and out-of-network reductions apply on several plans. For an expat in Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines or Japan, that makes two questions worth asking before anything else: does the plan you are looking at describe worldwide cover (Universal VIP does), and what are its conditions if you were ever treated in the USA. If you never expect US treatment, compare VUMI against insurers that let you exclude the USA outright; our guide to regional versus worldwide cover in Asia explains why that matters for the premium.
All VUMI maxima and deductibles are published in US dollars, which keeps comparison simple against other US-dollar plans. The specialty plans may be the more interesting part of the range for some people in the region: Senior VIP's 60-to-90 application window is unusual, and Optimum VIP's chronic-conditions focus is a niche few others publish. Do not confuse Optimum VIP with Optimum Global, a separate insurer with a similar name. IPMIAsia compares VUMI with the rest of the market through Nomi so the plan-specific conditions can be set against price.

Who VUMI suits
A strong fit if you want very high or unlimited maxima on a core plan, you are older and need a plan that accepts applicants to age 90, or you need cover for specified chronic conditions and the rest of the market has little to offer.
Worth comparing alternatives if you want a simple tier ladder with a published worldwide-excluding-USA area, or you would rather not work through plan-specific network conditions. Browse all insurers to see the alternatives.
